Hysterectomy
Hysterectomy is the surgical removal of all or part of the uterus, and at times, may include the removal of the fallopian tubes and ovaries. Hysterectomy is utilized for both benign and cancerous diseases/conditions, and is the most common non-obstetrical surgical procedure for women in the United States.
Reasons for a Hysterectomy
Hysterectomy treats a number of conditions and diseases including:
- Chronic pain
- Fibroids
- Heavy bleeding
- Endometriosis
- Pelvic floor prolapse
- Uterine and cervical cancers
Treatment Options
Hysterectomies can be performed through a traditional open procedure or incision, vaginally, laparoscopically, or robotically.
There are three types of hysterectomy:
- Supracervical or subtotal hysterectomy – removal of the uterus only
- Total hysterectomy – removes the uterus and cervix
- Radical hysterectomy – may remove the uterus, cervix, plus the pelvic lymph nodes
