Sadia Khan, D.O., training with Melvin J. Silverstein, M.D. to learn the latest techniques in oncoplastic breast conservation surgery
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., March 27, 2015 – Hoag announced that Dr. Sadia Khan is the first recipient of the Muzzy Family Endowed Fellowship in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery. The Muzzy Family generously donated $1 million to establish the Fellowship which will provide significant resources for the physicians leading the way in quality breast cancer surgery at Hoag.
Oncoplastic breast surgery is a specialized surgical approach that combines the principles of oncologic surgery with the techniques of plastic surgery. Previously, a woman could only choose to have a mastectomy or lumpectomy, but both often deformed her breasts and damaged her psyche. By combining the two techniques during the same procedure, surgeons not only remove the cancer, but they also design the operation in such a way, that it yields a better cosmetic and sensual result than standard lumpectomy.
Through the establishment of the Muzzy Family Endowed Fellowship in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery, Hoag is able to offer a sustainable funding source for continuous training of one fellow per year in perpetuity. Each fellow will not only have received world-class training in oncoplastic surgical techniques, but they will go on to share their knowledge with their colleagues, subsequently improving the lives of thousands of women with breast cancer across the country.

Under the guidance of Dr. Silverstein, the Muzzy Family Fellows will be trained on highly specialized techniques and provided with skill sets that will prepare them for their future role as a leader in oncoplastic breast conservation surgery.
