At Hoag, we encourage you to take an active role in your breast health. A mammogram is an essential step of a women’s health journey. A mammogram is a low dose X-ray exam that takes images of the breast to detect breast cancer early.
Knowing what to expect at your mammogram may help calm your nerves or just help the process go smoothly.
Here are some tips on how to best prepare for your mammogram:
- Wear comfortable and loose clothing – Pants or skirts are recommended, so you only need to remove your bra and shirt during the mammogram.
- Avoid deodorant, lotions, or perfumes on the day of your screening, as these can interfere with the interpretation of the images.
- If this is your first time at a new breast center, try to get your previous records and bring them with you or have them sent to the new facility. Bring a list of your previous mammogram dates and locations, including information from any previous breast procedure or biopsy.
- To help reduce discomfort, avoid scheduling your mammogram when your breasts may be tender, this is likely the week prior to your menstrual cycle.
- Consult your primary care provider prior to your mammogram if you are experiencing changes (e.g., new or enlarging lump, focal pain, discharge, etc.) to your breasts to determine if more in-depth diagnostic imaging is needed.
What happens after my mammogram?
Once the mammogram is complete, a highly specialized, dedicated Hoag breast radiologist will interpret the results, typically the next business day. Soon after, the report will be available in the electronic medical record system as well as a mailed letter.
