Spending Time in Nature is Beneficial to Mental Health

“Nature itself is the best physician.” – Hippocrates

What writers, poets and ardent lovers of the outdoors have instinctively known – that being in nature is a balm for the stresses of daily life – is a universal message for Earth Day and beyond. Decades of research have shown the vital connection between exposure to green natural environments and better well-being.

“Research has shown that being in nature can have a significant impact on anxiety, depression and overall stress reduction,” said Anusha Wijeyakumar MA, CPC, E-RYT, dip mentoring, wellness consultant for Hoag. “Living in Southern California, we are so lucky to be surrounded by beautiful scenery from the ocean to the mountains – and it’s something that is free to enjoy.”

According to a March 2023 study in the scientific journal Nature, for example, people who frequented both yard and green spaces had the best mental health and personal well-being scores compared with those who visited those spaces less frequently.

Here’s how you can integrate time in nature into your life:

  • Schedule a leisurely walk around Orange County’s beautiful ocean vistas or at a greenery-filled neighborhood park. At least once a week, try to get outside and sit on the grass or bench to relax. Sitting in nature can be just as beneficial as walking in nature.
  • Plan a hike to a destination with a lot of trees on the weekend. Orange County has a bounty of beautiful trails that are easily accessible.
  • Add a nature component to your next vacation, whether it’s taking a dip in the Pacific Ocean, hiking around Lake Arrowhead or exploring the desert in Palm Springs.

“In all these endeavors, it’s important to be in the moment and focus on relaxing, breathing fresh air, and observing and appreciating the nature around you,” shared Wijeyakumar. “Put down any technology, as this can be a great practice of mindfulness. The goal is to disconnect from stressors and recharge.”
