Proceeds from the 2014 Toshiba Classic benefited the Mary & Dick Allen Diabetes Center for the fourth consecutive year and raised just over $1 million for the Allen Diabetes Center. The tournament has generated nearly $17 million to benefit Hoag throughout its twenty year history.
This year’s Toshiba Classic was held March 10-16, 2014. The Toshiba Classic is the largest and most exciting annual event in Orange County. 150 sponsors, 1,200 volunteers and 85,000 spectators support the Toshiba Classic each year, providing the means for a tournament that produces record earnings for charity, and an event that has become a tradition in the Orange County community.
The American Diabetes Association estimates that nearly 26 million Americans live with diabetes and more than 79 million Americans are at increased risk for diabetes. Recognizing that Orange County is deeply affected by this chronic disease, The Mary & Dick Allen Diabetes Center is dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of people with diabetes through its clinical, educational and support services.
Innovative and customized programs at the Allen Diabetes Center include “ Sweet Success;” a program tailored for women who have diabetes while pregnant; pediatric diabetes services, a multicultural program and the Herbert Family Program for Young Adults with Type 1 Diabetes. Additionally, the Allen Diabetes Center is committed to community outreach and programs that provide care to underserved populations.
It is because of the generosity and support of the community and organizations like Toshiba that the Mary & Dick Allen Diabetes Center is able to provide comprehensive services for those with, or at risk for diabetes regardless of their ability to pay.
Much more than a first class golf tournament, the Toshiba Classic has evolved as a platform for Toshiba to support healthcare, children and education in our community. In addition to the millions of dollars raised for Hoag, Toshiba has used the Toshiba Classic venue to award scholarships to deserving students and laptops to local schools in the last 12 years. For Toshiba, giving back to the community in which its employees live and work is fundamentally important. That idea was a key driver in the company’s decision in 1994 to sponsor the Toshiba Classic.
