November is Diabetes Month

This month the American Diabetes Association and the Allen Diabetes Center are encouraging everyone to take action and help Stop Diabetes. The Allen Center invites the community to learn more about Diabetes and how to take steps to fight the disease.

Nearly 26 million Americans live with diabetes, including approximately 250,000 Orange County residents, and an additional 79 million Americans are at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes. Every 17 seconds someone is diagnosed with the disease, and if it isn’t properly managed it can lead to heart attacks, strokes, amputation, blindness, kidney failure and nerve damage. But there is good news: diabetes complications can be prevented or delayed by properly managing blood glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Eating healthy, being physically active and quitting smoking also can help lower the risk of diabetes complications.
