Specialized Diabetes Care for Pregnant Women
Hoag’s Mary & Dick Allen Diabetes Center provides support and education for women who have or develop diabetes while they are pregnant through the state- affiliated Sweet Success program. The goal of Sweet Success is to improve outcomes for women who have pregnancies affected by diabetes.
The Sweet Success program cares for women with gestational diabetes mellitus, or GDM, a condition that women develop when they become pregnant, as well as woman who already have type 1 or type 2 diabetes and become pregnant. Careful management of diabetes during pregnancy is essential to ensure a safe pregnancy and a healthy baby.
Certified Diabetes Educators at the Allen Diabetes Center provide classes and information for pregnant and breast feeding women with diabetes to provide detailed meal planning and consultation related to medications, as well as insulin instruction and pump training if needed. Certified Diabetes Educators provide educational, nutritional and emotional resources to support the expectant mother and baby throughout the pregnancy and postpartum experience.
Services include:
- Pre-conception counseling
- Gestational diabetes classes
- Individual sessions for pre-existing diabetes (type i or type 2) and pregnancy
The Ueberroth Program for Women and Diabetes at the Allen Diabetes Center dramatically enhances the continuity of care available to women in the community. Funded through a generous grant from the Peter and Ginny Ueberroth Foundation, this program allows the Allen Diabetes Center to expand its award winning Sweet Success program to benefit many additional mothers throughout Orange County, including women who speak Spanish only.
