As Medical Director of Infection Prevention and Hospital Epidemiology at Hoag, Philip Robinson, MD, FIDSA, has led the COVID-19 efforts for Hoag. In January, the Orange County Health Care Agency selected Hoag to care for California’s first COVID-19 patient, who has since fully recovered. In March, he provided advice on COVID-19 to the community during the City of Irvine’s COVID-19 Virtual Town Hall in March.
Dr. Robinson is the principal investigator at Hoag for the Gilead COVID-19 Remdesivir Clinical Trial and sub-investigator for Expanded Access to Convalescent Plasma for the treatment of patients with COVID-19.
Dr. Robinson has played a crucial role in keeping Hoag staff and physicians informed on COVID-19-related advancements, whether in research or clinical care, and continues to be a positive guiding force. The staff often describes him as an angel on earth, noting that his calm and welcoming demeanor has helped get them through some of the toughest days during this crisis.
Serving Hoag since 2008, Dr. Robinson’s other areas of expertise include antimicrobial stewardship at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian and Hoag Orthopedic Institute and long-term care facilities. He is co-chair of the Providence St. Joseph Health Infectious Disease Clinical Decision Team and a Fellow of the Infectious Disease Society of America.
Dr. Robinson has served by invitation on several state and national committees. He is currently the immediate past-president of the Infectious Disease Association of California and the past-chair of the Healthcare Associated Infection Workgroup of the Hospital Quality Institute of the California Hospital Association. In addition to the Orange County Health Care Agency, he works closely with the California Department of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Dr. Robinson earned his medical degree at Michigan State University, College of Human Medicine. He completed his Infectious Disease Fellowship at USC, Los Angeles County Medical Center, and an Internal Medicine Internship and Residency at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.
