5 West has officially become a fully staffed, fully functional, and independent Tri-level care unit. This accomplishment includes the integration of a new director, four new charge nurses, five relief charge nurses, 12 nurses trained in SUB ICU care, and 12 nurses proficient in ultrasound-guided IV insertion. This marks a significant transformation from the unit’s starting point in 2023, where it had no such specialized staff or training. Through these advancements, the unit has enhanced its ability to provide high-quality, complex care and has positioned itself as a model of efficiency and competence in the hospital.
5W achieved nursing satisfaction scores exceeding national averages, as reported by the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI). This is a direct reflection of the hard work and dedication of the unit’s nursing staff, their commitment to patient care, and the positive work environment the unit has fostered. These results speak volumes about the culture of collaboration, support and excellence within our team.
5W has met all critical care ladder goals, including zero instances of CAUTIs (Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections), zero CLABSIs (Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infections), and zero reportable HAPIs (Hospital-Acquired Pressure Injuries). Additionally, the unit saw an improvement in falls with injury compared to 2023, demonstrating our commitment to patient safety and clinical excellence. These achievements highlight the unit’s ongoing efforts to provide the highest level of care and safety to every patient.
5 West expanded its clinical ladder program, growing from just four clinical ladder nurses to 18 in 2024. This expansion has been instrumental in addressing key issues within the hospital and on the unit. By investing in professional development and recognizing the skills and contributions of the nursing staff, the unit has strengthened its team and improved the overall care provided to patients.
