Fudge Family Acute Rehabilitation Center Expands Offering More People a New Lease on Life

Standing. Walking. Buttoning a shirt. The things that most of us take for granted can be “mini miracles” after serious injuries or illness. At the Fudge Family Acute Rehabilitation Center, those mini miracles happen every day.

“Our center is where patients relearn tasks lost to injury or illness. It is a safe place, where they can regain their confidence to return to their lives while still receiving any additional medical attention required from their physicians or specialists,” said Keyvan Esmaeili, M.D., medical director at the center. “We have seen an increased need for the excellence in rehabilitative care that Hoag provides.”

To answer that call, Hoag expanded the center from 18 to 24 beds, giving more people access to Hoag’s comprehensive team of world-class physicians, nurses and certified therapists – people whose expertise are matched only by their compassion.

“The medical knowledge and downright caring and sympathy from all the people at Hoag associated with all stages of my recovery is such a blessing,” said Oscar Constandse, a patient of the Fudge Family Acute Rehabilitation Center after an unexpected fall in Mexico resulted in him being transported by medivac to Hoag.

Part of the Pickup Family Neurosciences Institute at Hoag, the center is a world-class, intensive, 24-hour inpatient rehabilitation unit that helps patients regain function and mobility through a variety of physical, occupational and speech therapy scenarios.

Complementing the center’s existing state-of-the-art amenities – including a therapy kitchen, car, workout equipment, outdoor therapy garden, putting green and virtual reality system – the expansion also features:

  • All individual patient rooms with private bathrooms
  • One-on-one physical, occupational and speech therapy
  • A warm, comfortable and modern environment with plenty of natural light to help promote wellness and healing
  • Access to all Hoag services

These additional amenities and services build upon the round-the-clock comprehensive care that patients have come to expect of Hoag.

“Our individualized programs help patients improve function, achieve independence and return to community living after a stroke, brain injury, brain tumor, spine surgery or other conditions. What we see are patients striving for the highest-possible quality of life, and we strive along with them,” said Dr. Esmaeli.

Since it opened in 2018, the Fudge Family Acute Rehabilitation Center has helped more than 2,000 patients and is continuously recognized for its high patient satisfaction and quality care. Hoag doctors and patients alike said they trust this expansion will bring hope and healing to more people in our community who need it.

“I think what elevates the beauty of this miraculous existence are the people in my life. Not only my buddies, my brother, and my wife, who is a huge gift, but all the medical professionals at Hoag,” Oscar shared.

“My taking this deviation before coming back to join society has given me a renewed appreciation of things.”
