Hoag’s Comprehensive Maternal Care

When women in Orange County consider starting a family, many choose a doctor based on their affiliation with Hoag. It’s easy to see why.

Hoag offers the most patient-centric birthing experience in Orange County. Hoag is also here for the things that few expecting moms can plan for.

At her regular six-month prenatal appointment, Jessica Inyang’s doctor suspected preeclampsia, and recommended that Jessica be seen at Hoag’s dedicated obstetrical emergency department. Hoag was the only hospital in Orange County to establish an emergency department specifically for expectant mothers.

Hoag specialists confirmed that Jessica was in trouble, and so was her baby. Due to Jessica’s persistent and dangerously high blood pressure, emergency delivery was necessary. Under the guidance of her perinatologist, Westin Mercy was born at 24 weeks. She was the size of a Barbie doll.

“I felt we were in the right place, at the right time. Right away, I could tell we were in the best possible hands,” Seth Inyang said. “It’s a blessing that Jessica chose Hoag.”

That includes Hoag’s world-class Level-III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), where Westin would spend her first four months of life.

Before her cesarean section, Jessica and her husband, Seth, met with Vladana Milisavljevic, M.D., M.S., F.A.C.C., Al & Mary Ann Schoellerman Endowed Chair in Neonatology, and chief of neonatology and medical director of the NICU at Hoag, and immediately noted how compassionate and caring the doctor was. In the four months Westin spent in the NICU, growing bigger and stronger, the Inyangs witnessed how Dr. Milisavljevic and the team worked so well together.

“It was such a cohesive unit,” Jessica Inyang said. “You sensed that everyone trusted everyone else.”

  • New moms have good reason to trust Hoag:
  • An Antepartum unit, maternal-fetal medicine specialists care for hospitalized women who are experiencing pregnancy complications such as preterm labor, premature rupture of membranes, preeclampsia and placental issues.
  • A Fetal Diagnostic Center which provides maternal and fetal monitoring for high-risk pregnancies.
  • A NICU delivering around-the-clock care from expert neonatologists.
  • Magnet®-designated neonatal nurses, respiratory therapists and other multidisciplinary team members specially trained to take care of infants born prematurely or with a challenging start to life outside of mother’s womb.

“Our goal is for all of our NICU babies to enjoy happy and healthy childhoods and lives,” said Dr. Milisavljevic.

“In a perfect world, families with new babies would never meet our neonatal team. However, just knowing that we are here and ready with high quality, family centered, multidisciplinary expert care, gives our community much needed peace of mind.”
