When it comes to orthopedic care, it doesn’t get any better than Hoag Orthopedic Institute (HOI) – that’s because it’s the only thing we do.
HOI is Orange County’s only specialty hospital and ambulatory surgery center network whose dedication to patient outcomes, safety and experience sets it apart from the rest. Ranked in the top 1% the nation by U.S. News & World Report, HOI has dedicated experts in all aspects of musculoskeletal care including: spine, sports, shoulder, knee hip, foot, ankle, hand, wrist and elbow.
The HOI Experience: An Environment Like No Other
Patient experience matters. When a patient goes in for surgery, they trust their doctor and the facility to know what they are doing. However, it is vital that HOI patients have an exceptional experience. HOI accomplishes an exceptional patient experience by proactively engaging with patients, actively listening to their feedback and identifying ways to enhance their visit. Patients often report that the environment, service and care at HOI is “luxurious,” and we aim to ensure they are as comfortable and accommodated as possible. See sidebar about HOI’s Press Ganey Awards for Patient Experience.
Highest Volume Provider on The West Coast
As the saying goes, practice makes perfect. More patients choose HOI than any other hospital on the West Coast for their joint replacement procedures, and HOI performs the highest number of spine surgeries in Orange County. HOI physicians, staff, physical therapists and care team members all focus exclusively on orthopedic and spine cases so you can rest assured that you are being cared for by the best of the best. For the eighth consecutive year, HOI performed the highest volume of joint replacement procedures in the state of California according to data from the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD), and the highest volume of spine surgeries in Orange County. Numerous studies indicate that the more surgeries you perform, the better the result.
Focus on Safety in a Time of COVID
While safety has always been a top priority at HOI, in the age of COVID-19, it has become even more paramount. During the pandemic, HOI has added additional testing and other stringent procedures to ensure patients and hospital staff are COVID-free before and after surgery. Between each surgery, HOI uses a robot to eliminate germs in the operating room among a host of other additional infection control measures. This infection control protocol designed by HOI is so effective at the elimination of potential infections, especially COVID-19, that it has been shared with and adopted by other hospitals around the state.
A new study from Rothman Institute found that orthopedic specialty hospitals – like HOI which only treat patients with musculoskeletal conditions – are associated with lower rates of surgical site infections (SSI) when compared to tertiary care institutions, which are typically academic hospitals. The study found that SSI were found in 0.6 percent of patients who underwent surgery at a tertiary hospital and 0.2 percent in patients who underwent surgery at an orthopedic specialty hospital.
This study underscores why it is so important for patients to do some homework about the hospital or facility that their orthopedic surgeon selects for their surgery. Infection control measures at Hoag Orthopedic Institute are robust and meaningful and the process of ensuring better outcomes and reducing infection risk begins way before your surgery, including immunizations, vigorous testing and at-home measures.
