Hoag’s ‘New, Dynamic Approach’ to Sports Medicine and Active Lifestyles Captures the Imagination, and the Heart, of Nationally Renowned Physicians

Ask South Orange County residents what drew them to this special part of Southern California, and many will likely give you a knowing smile and nod toward the picturesque Santa Ana Mountains that loom large as a symbolic backdrop to the area’s beloved outdoor lifestyle that few residents can resist.
Among those who don’t even try to resist is Jeremiah Ray, M.D. The nationally renowned physician recently joined the sports medicine team at Hoag Health Center Foothill Ranch.
A former collegiate soccer player and professional snowboarder, Dr. Ray said he is excited to bring his medical expertise and passion for outdoor adventures to Hoag. At Hoag Health Center Foothill Ranch, patients are benefiting from his expertise in a wide array of sports medicine conditions and treatments with the goal of getting his patients back to being active and doing what they love. He also offers advanced regenerative medicine techniques such as orthobiologics, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), stem cells and prolotherapy. Additionally, he has deep clinical interest and expertise in sports-related concussions, cardiac screening in athletes, and relative energy deficiency in sport (REDs). Dr. Ray also is a nationally recognized expert in diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound and minimally invasive ultrasound-guided techniques, such as perineural hydrolysis and fascial plane hydrodissections.
“I was drawn to the Sports Medicine Program at Hoag because of its commitment to caring for athletes and the community at large with a comprehensive approach,” said Dr. Ray, whose wife, Anne, will also be serving Orange County patients as a family medicine physician with Hoag Medical Group in Foothill Ranch. In joining Hoag, the couple and their four young children relocated from Northern California, where Dr. Ray served as the head of intercollegiate athletic sports at University of California, Davis. They recently purchased a home in South Orange County.
“I loved what I was doing in Northern California,” Dr. Ray explained, “but there were a couple of things that really convinced us to uproot our lives and come here. One was Hoag’s extraordinary commitment to caring for athletes and the community at large with a new, dynamic approach to sports medicine and active lifestyles. And the other was the people, the scenic beauty and the abundant outdoor opportunities of South Orange County. It’s rare to find that combination in a single geographic area, but this community has it all.”
Hoag and Hoag Orthopedic Institute’s (HOI) renowned sports medicine doctors have been treating Southern California athletes for more than 25 years. Now, at Hoag Health Center Foothill Ranch, Hoag is building upon that care by combining primary care with sports medicine, fitness, nutrition and other services to help patients prevent and recover from injuries and illness.
Dr. Ray said he is particularly impressed with the Hoag Lifestyle Program, an innovative approach that clinically integrates health and wellness. The physicians at Foothill Ranch contribute to shaping this program that connects the medical care plan with a prescribed wellness plan including stress management, nutrition and exercise, all located at Foothill Ranch and facilitated under the expert guidance of the Hoag Lifestyle team. Patients who are prescribed by their doctors into the program receive a personalized approach to connecting their medical care plan with the added support and accountability of the Lifestyle Program that will motivate their lifelong journey to optimum health.
“It’s a privilege to be part of an organization that is deeply committed to providing world class care, right here in the community and for every member of the community,” Dr. Ray said.
