Around Town: Alzheimer's center honors distinguished friends

Alzheimer’s Family Services Center will celebrate William R. Shankle and Junko Hara as the center’s 2014 Distinguished Friend honorees during its 14th Gathering of Friends gala in May.

The married couple are longtime supporters of the agency and experts in the field of memory and cognitive disorders. Shankle is a board certified neurologist, the Judy and Richard Voltmer Chair in Memory and Cognitive Disorders, and director of the Orange County Vital Brain Aging Program at Pickup Family Neurosciences Institute. Hara specializes in the application of advanced technology to healthcare and clinical research in the area of Alzheimer’s and related disorders.

Gerald D. Weinstein will also be honored as the center’s 2014 Participant honoree. Weinstein was chairman of the department of dermatology at UC Irvine for more than three decades and also served as the dean of the UCI Medical School from 1984 to 1987. Weinstein has been attending the center since June 2013.

The Alzheimer’s center is a nonprofit agency affiliated with the Hoag Neurosciences Institute and focused on improving the quality of life for families living with Alzheimer’s.

The event will be held May 10 at The Waterfront Beach Resort in Huntington Beach. Tickets are $200 and sponsorship opportunities are available. Hoag Memorial Hospital is matching sponsorships up to $50,000.
