IRVINE, Calif., October 30, 2018 — Hoag Hospital Irvine today unveiled the much-anticipated Benjamin & Carmela Du Emergency Pavilion – the new, state-of-the-art Emergency Department (ED) that expands the facility to nearly five times its original size. The patient-centered design of the new ED offers the community greater access to expert emergent care, an enhanced patient experience, and increased care for complex patient conditions.
The ED expanded by 13,500 square feet, which is now open to the public. The original 3,600-square-foot ED space will undergo a renovation with project completion expected in early 2019.
Hoag officials named the Emergency Department after Benjamin & Carmela Du who generously contributed $5 million towards the renovation and expansion. The Benjamin & Carmela Du Emergency Pavilion at Hoag Hospital Irvine will include:
- 32 private treatment rooms
- Two triage areas and four fast-track stations
- Private family consultation rooms
- Increased telemedicine through robotics for pediatrics, stroke and other complex patient conditions
- Efficient processes to facilitate faster, more appropriate care including the treatment of minor injuries in “fast track” bays
For the Dus, their support fit a need that was obvious and meaningful. As a member of the Hoag Hospital Foundation Board of Directors, Benjamin Du was invited to tour the final phase of construction of the ED.
“I saw a state-of-the-art emergency facility and I thought it was very good for the area,” he says. He brought Carmela back for a tour, and the two agreed that this growing region of Irvine and South Orange County would benefit from the beautiful 17,000-square-foot facility and the compassionate care Hoag provides.
“We’re very excited to make this a reality,” Benjamin says. “After learning all that they have planned, we know that Irvine residents will have access to outstanding care and an advanced facility.”
Hoag Hospital Irvine has received prestigious designations for its devotion to patient care and safety. The Pickup Family Neurosciences Institute’s Stroke Program at Hoag Hospital Irvine is certified as a Primary Stroke Center, affirming readiness to handle a full range of stroke-related medical problems in the ED. Hoag also has received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines® Heart Failure and Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award, as well as being designated a Cardiovascular Receiving Center (CVRC), awarded by the Orange County Emergency Medical Services (OCEMS).
Marcy Brown, vice president of Hoag Hospital Irvine and Ambulatory Services, is grateful for the generosity of the Dus and what it will mean for the South County community. “What the Dus have done is tremendous and will help us transform health care in our growing community through improved patient experience in the emergent care setting,” she said.
In addition to the Du’s $5 million gift, philanthropic support for the expansion totals more than $8.5 million from community members who value Hoag’s role in community health and who recognize the need for this vital component of health care. The earliest donors to support the project were Missy Pace Callero and Chris Callero, who gave $1 million and David and Michelle Horowitz, who also gave $1 million. Many other community members stepped forward with support including Daphne and Kai Liang, Jessica Liang Kim and Andrew Kim, David and Diana Sun, Pacific Life Foundation and Allan and Sandy Fainbarg to name a few.
