Hoag Welcomes New Cardiac Surgeon: Asad Shah, M.D.

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., September 25, 2018 — Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian announced today that Asad Shah, M.D., a rising national star in cardiothoracic surgery, has joined the Jeffrey M. Carlton Heart & Vascular Institute at Hoag. Dr. Shah comes to Hoag from the University of North Carolina, Rex Hospital, where he served on staff as a cardiothoracic surgeon.

After earning his doctorate of medicine from Duke University School of Medicine in North Carolina, Dr. Shah completed a cardiothoracic surgery residency at Duke University Medical Center. During his time in residency, Dr. Shah also received certification in the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System.

Hoag officials said Dr. Shah — board-certified in cardiothoracic surgery and the author of dozens of published medical research papers and book chapters about innovative and advanced cardiac surgery – impressed them with his intellectual curiosity, natural leadership skills and deep compassion for his patients.

“Dr. Shah has developed an impressive expertise in minimally invasive cardiothoracic surgery,” said Robert T. Braithwaite, president and CEO, Hoag. “His passion for innovation and to improving patient outcomes makes him an ideal fit for Hoag.”

Dr. Shah said he was excited to move from Raleigh to Newport Beach, for this was an obvious next step in his career. Most of all, he said, he is honored to work alongside Hoag’s dedicated and forward-thinking cardiovascular specialists.

“Hoag is world-renowned for high-quality cardiac surgery and comprehensive interventional cardiology and its constant pursuit of improving cardiac care,” he said. “I have found the team stimulating and inspiring, and I’m looking forward to working together to advance patient care in Orange County.”
