Advantages of Endoscopic Weight Loss Procedures

Endoscopic weight loss procedures are a newer type of minimally invasive, non-surgical procedures. A small, flexible scope is inserted through the mouth, so there are no cuts or incisions needed. Generally, endoscopic procedures for weight loss have a lower risk of complications and quicker recovery time than surgery, so patients can recover at home rather than requiring an inpatient stay.

Am I a candidate for endoscopic weight loss procedures?

In most cases, candidates fit the following criteria: 

• 18-70 years of age 

• Body Mass Index between 30-50 

• Weight less than or equal to 500 lbs 

• Ambulatory 

• No pregnancy or planned pregnancy within 1 year of procedure 

• No active malignancy currently being treated 

• No active substance abuse 

Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG)

ESG is a minimally invasive weight loss procedure for people with no prior history of bariatric surgery. Hoag’s advanced endoscopists use an endoscopic suturing device to reduce the size and volume of the stomach by as much as 80%. On average, patients who choose to have an ESG lose 11-20% of total body weight over 6-12 months.
