GI Genius™ Intelligent Endoscopy Module
What is the GI Genius Intelligent Endoscopy Module?
The GI Genius Intelligent Endoscopy Module is a medical device that utilizes artificial intelligence to help physicians detect colorectal polyps during colonoscopy, including those that may be flat and small, making them hard to detect.
Developed by medical device maker Medtronic, the GI Genius Intelligent Endoscopy Module was approved by the FDA in 2021, and is the first computer-aided polyp detection platform.
Colorectal polyps called adenomas, which can sometimes be hard to detect during a colonoscopy with the unaided eye, can develop into colorectal cancer unless removed.
In studies, GI Genius has been shown to boost adenoma detection rates by over 14 percent, with an adenoma miss rate of less than 1 percent.
What Medical Conditions Can GI Genius Help Diagnose?
The GI Genius primarily helps in the prevention of colorectal cancer, which is the third leading cause of cancer death in the United States. Early detection of colorectal polyps, which can develop into cancerous lesions if not detected during a colonoscopy and removed, is essential in the prevention of colorectal cancer.
GI Genius aids in this early detection, playing a pivotal role in diagnosing and potentially preventing the progression of colorectal cancer and colorectal polyps.
How Does The GI Genius Work?
GI Genius is powered by a sophisticated artificial intelligence system that scans every visual frame taken during a colonoscopy procedure in milliseconds, providing real-time alerts to the physician if it detects any suspected colonic mucosal lesions. This is especially helpful in detecting lesions that are small and flat, which can often be overlooked during a standard colonoscopy. This enhanced visualization is pivotal in detecting more polyps so they can be removed, along with the chance they might develop into colorectal cancer.
