Types of Sleep Disorders
There are more than 100 types of sleep disorders that have been identified, all of which can be both physically and psychologically damaging. The Hoag Sleep Health Program has been studying and treating patients for the past 20 years, and is uniquely positioned to treat even the most challenging conditions.
The Hoag Sleep Health Program was custom built with 10 bedrooms in two locations to conduct sleep studies. The rooms are private and designed to feel like a high-quality hotel.
Here is a list of the most common types of sleeping disorders:
- Insomnia– Characterized as difficulty falling or staying asleep, which is often a symptom of a separate issue and can be caused by a number of factors.
- Narcolepsy– Defined as episodes of excessive drowsiness during the day with a tendency to sleep at inappropriate times.
- Obstructive Sleep Apnea– Indicated by extremely loud snoring for about 5 percent of particularly overweight, middle-aged men.
- Periodic Limb Movement Disorder / Restless Legs Syndrome– A neurological disorder characterized by an irresistible urge to move one’s limbs, which disrupts an individual’s ability to stay asleep at night and function normally during the day.
- REM Sleep Behavior Disorder – Rapid Eye Movement (REM) is a naturally occurring sleep phase and this disorder relates to abnormal behavior during REM sleep. Behavior is often in response to the content of the individual’s dreams while sleeping.
Hoag has top-of-the-line diagnostic equipment from Care Fusion, which meet and exceed American Academy of Sleep Medicine guidelines. For more information on the program, call 949-764-8070.
