Fibroadenomas
Fibroadenomas are benign, non-cancerous tumors commonly found in the breast tissue of women, particularly those in their reproductive years. These tumors are characterized by a combination of glandular and connective tissue and often feel like smooth lumps. While fibroadenomas are not associated with an increased risk of breast cancer, they can cause concern due to their potential to mimic the symptoms of malignant growths, such as breast lumps or changes in breast tissue.
Typically, fibroadenomas are painless and mobile, meaning they can be moved under the skin and feel like a “pebble”. They are usually discovered through routine appointments, mammograms or breast self-exams. Despite their benign nature, some fibroadenomas may be removed if they cause discomfort or grow significantly in size. Surgery is a common method for removal.
It is important for women who notice any changes in their breast tissue or experience discomfort to consult with their medical provider. While fibroadenomas are non-cancerous, it is important to rule out more serious conditions.
